Guide to Property Damage

Steps to Take When a Disaster Strikes

If your property was damaged or destroyed during a catastrophic event, it is important to report the damage to our office as soon as possible. Catastrophic events could be caused by weather,  such as a hurricane, tornado or flood, or non-weather, such as a fire, water damage or structural issues. If the residence is uninhabitable for 30 days or more, then you may be eligible for a property tax refund.

All properties are assessed as of January 1 of each year. After the catastrophic event, the property will be reassessed to reflect the sustained damage. The adjustment to your property value due to the damage will not impact your property taxes the year the damage occurred. Instead, you may see a property tax savings the following year.
