Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans

This November as we honor and salute our Veterans, our office would also like to share the Veteran-related property tax exemptions available to Florida homeowners. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, St. Johns County’s population is comprised of approximately 10% of Veterans, so these exemptions are available to benefit a significant number of people here in our county by providing a relief in property taxes.

Property tax exemptions reduce a property’s taxable value, which results in lower property taxes. The following exemptions are available for Florida Veterans.

  • Disabled Veterans – This is a $5,000 exemption for Veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more. Un-married surviving spouses may also be eligible for this exemption.
  • Totally and Permanently Disabled Veterans – This exemption is available for Veterans who have been honorably discharged with a service-connected total and permanent disability and provides a complete exemption of property taxes. Un-married surviving spouses may also be eligible for this exemption.
  • Senior Combat-Related Disabled Veterans – This exemption is available for Veterans 65 years of age or older as of January 1 who have been honorably discharged and have a combat-related disability. This exemption totals the percentage equal to the Veteran’s disability rating. Un-married surviving spouses may also be eligible for this exemption.
  • Surviving Spouses of Veterans Who Died While on Active Duty – This exemption provides a complete exemption of property taxes for un-married surviving spouses.

Our office works closely with the Veterans Administration and Veterans’ Services Office of St. Johns County to help Veterans receive eligible exemptions. Since each Veteran’s situation is unique, it is recommended to contact our office to determine eligibility.

To our Veterans, thank you for your service and dedication to our country. It would be an honor to assist you in getting the property tax exemptions you so deserve. We salute you not just in November on Veterans Day, but every day of the year as well.
